Deserted by wife, drunkard hangs self

June 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - New Delhi:

A 35-year-old man has hanged himself apparently depressed over his wife’s desertion due to his drinking habit, the police said.

Identified as Satvir, the victim was found hanging from the ceiling fan at his residence in Kanjhawala on Friday evening.

He worked odd jobs and lived with his four children and, according to his family, had been an alcoholic for long.

“After her repeated warnings to go sober went unheeded, his wife left him and went to stay with her parents around three months ago leaving their four children behind. Satvir tried to persuade her to return home several times, but she remained adamant,” said a senior police officer.

Finding it difficult to look after his children on his own, Satvir apparently slipped into depression, according to his eldest son Anshu.

According to the police, Ashu said his father had stopped going to work and would remain aloof with his children when at home.

“His suicide was discovered by Anshu on Friday night after he told his children that he was retiring to his room to take rest. Anshu went to check on him sometime later to find the room locked from inside,” said the officer.

“The room was forcibly broken into and Satvir was found hanging from the ceiling fan. The police were informed and the body sent for post-mortem. No suicide note was recovered from his possession,” the officer said. Foul play was ruled out after the police questioned Satvir’s family.
