The Delhi government is working rapidly to transform the Capital’s roads along European standards, said Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday.
Mr. Sisodia, who also holds the Public Works Department (PWD) portfolio, made the comment while inspecting redevelopment and streetscaping on selected PWD roads.
Mr. Sisodia reviewed the streetscaping work between Moti Bagh and Naraina and instructed PWD officials to expedite construction work.
“Under the streetscaping project, the Delhi government aims to decongest, redesign and beautify several roads across the national capital,” Mr. Sisodia said.
“Sixteen roads are being beautified by the PWD as per the specific needs in the pilot phase. After its completion, 540 km of roads will also be beautified on the same lines,” he added.
Pollution levels
Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, meanwhile, contended that air pollution levels in the Capital were breaking records due to the bad condition of its roads.
He said the main cause of pollution in Delhi was dust on the roads and the Delhi government was responsible for their state of non-repair.
Mr. Bidhuri reminded that the Supreme Court had said that road dust was the biggest reason for Delhi’s pollution. “This time, no road was repaired after the rainy season and all the minor and big roads of the city are in a bad condition,” the leader added.
