Six constituencies in different corners of the Capital could be the ones to watch out for on Sunday, when elections to the municipal corporations of Delhi are held.
The municipal corporations’ elections would be the first test of the AAP’s strength in the Capital, two years after it won an unprecedented 67 out of 70 Assembly constituencies.
The constituencies, which comprise a total of 24 municipal wards, are where the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) either won with huge margins or barely managed to eke out a victory in the 2015 Assembly elections.
In the AAP’s first foray into the civic elections, the constituencies where it routed its opponents in 2015 become crucial.
Sultanpur Majra (SC), Deoli (SC) and Ambedkar Nagar (SC) chose the AAP overwhelmingly with margins of 56.04%, 46.94% and 43.79%, respectively.
Today, however, it’s not all smooth sailing for Delhi’s ruling party, with residents split over their choice.
For the constituencies where the AAP won with the lowest margins, the matter is even more complicated.
Areas like Najafgarh, Krishna Nagar and Shakur Basti voted for the AAP with 0.97%, 1.66% and 2.97% margins, respectively.
Divisions based on socio-economic and ideological lines remain sharp in these areas.
