Annoyed over his six-year-old son’s incessant crying for the Tibetan delicacy momos, a 31-year-old man allegedly killed the boy by throwing him into the Agra canal in south Delhi’s Jaitpur area on Saturday night.

The body of the child was recovered from the canal by the rescue teams on Sunday afternoon. Police have arrested the father, Sanjay Alwi, an e-rickshaw driver.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal said a PCR call was received at 10.10 p.m. from a passerby who saw a man throwing a child into the canal from Khadar bridge.

“The man was caught by locals. He was identified as Sanjay Alwi, of Bhangar Mohalla in Madanpur Khadar. He was drunk,” said Mr. Biswal.

On inquiry, several eyewitness told that they had seen Alwi throwing a child into the canal.

Immediately, local divers were arranged and rescue teams from fire department and disaster management team were deployed for the rescue operation.

Local divers and rescue teams from the fire department were, however, unable to locate the child in the dark. The body was found on Sunday afternoon.

“Despite the night-long operation, the rescue teams could not find the child’s body because it was dark. We registered a case of attempt to murder and apprehended Alwi,” said Mr. Biswal.

The child was identified as Ayyan. Alwi confirmed that the body was of his son and confessed that he had thrown him into the canal. Police added Section 302 (murder) in the FIR and arrested Alwi.

The officer said, during interrogation, Alwi confessed to having thrown his child into the canal unable to bear his persistent crying. It was also revealed that he was drunk when Alwi had returned home. His son demanded momos and started crying when he refused to fulfil his demand. “As the child was crying incessantly, Alwi became annoyed. He took his son and left home. He went and threw his son into the canal,” said the officer.

Habitual drinker

According to Mr. Biswal, Alwi was married to Ashma, 28, in 2004 and the couple has three children — one daughter and two sons. “Ashma left her husband in 2012-13 and started living with her parents in Sonipat, Haryana.

While daughter Nargis, 11, and Armaan, 10, live with their mother, Ayyan was living with his father and grandmother.

Alwi's uncle, Anil Alwi told police that his nephew was a habitual drinker and he often returned home drunk. Police have informed Alwi’s wife about her son’s murder.
