Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Wednesday granted permission to Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) to investigate 82 prison officials for their alleged involvement in an extortion racket being run by conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar when he was lodged in the Rohini jail here.
According to Raj Niwas officials, the case pertains to an alleged extortion of nearly ₹200 crore by Chandrashekhar “in collusion with prison officials”. Seven officials have already been arrested in the ongoing investigation into the extortion case under various sections of Indian Penal Code.
Chandrashekhar is currently lodged in Mandoli jail. He was movedthere from the Tihar jail in August this year after he approached the Supreme Court alleging a threat to his life.
The EOW had sought the L-G’s permission under Section 17(A) of the Prevention of Corruption Act after the probe revealed that more officials were involved in the alleged crime.
