The police constable recruitment written exam in Gujarat was cancelled after reports of paper leak hours before it was scheduled to be held on Sunday.

The Gujarat police on Tuesday arrested four more persons in connection with the leak of the paper for the police constable recruitment written exam, taking the number of those arrested to eight. Around a dozen more arrests are likely as the State police has launched probe in multiple centres.

“A Delhi-based gang is involved in leaking the question paper and providing the answer sheet to the candidates on payment of ₹5 lakh each,” Gandhinagar Superintendent of Police (SP) Mayur Chavda told journalists on Tuesday.

Talking about the probe, Mr. Chavda said a Delhi-based gang had taken 25-30 candidates to the national capital a few days before the exam. The candidates were given answer sheets in return for a blank cheque of ₹5 lakh per person.

“Each candidate was to pay ₹5 lakh after the exam and a blank cheque was taken in advance,” Mr. Chavda said.

He said four persons were arrested on Tuesday while some persons are being interrogated by the police. Among the eight persons already arrested are BJP workers Manhar Patel and Mukesh Chaudhary, and sub-inspector P.V. Patel. After Gujarat Chief Minister ordered an investigation in the case, the State Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), CID (Crime) and Ahmedabad Crime Branch joined hands with the Gandhinagar police to launch a probe at multiple centres.

The recruitment exam, conducted by Lok Rakshak Dal (LDR), was cancelled after reports of paper leak hours before it was scheduled to be held on Sunday.

The written exam was to be held for recruitment to 9,713 posts of fixed-pay constables. It was to be held at more than 2,300 centres across the State and over 8.7 lakh applicants were scheduled to appear in the written exam.
