Even as people flock to the Capital in search of jobs, a sample survey data has revealed that the unemployment rate in Delhi is more than the national average of unemployment rate in the urban area.
As per the Report on Employment & Unemployment situation in Delhi prepared by the Directorate of Economics & Statistics of the Delhi Government, the unemployment rate in the urban area of Delhi is 40 per thousand persons in labour force as compared to 34 per thousand in urban area at the national level.
The report is based on a sample survey conducted during 68th round of the National Sample Survey during 2011-12.
However, Delhi’s performance is better than the figures recorded in the urban areas of several other states like Haryana (42), Uttar Pradesh (41), J&K (70), Chandigarh (64) and 43 per thousand in the urban area of Andhra Pradesh.
However, the total number of unemployed in the city is only about 1.5 per cent of the total work force.
“About 57.60 lakh persons (33.39 percent of the total population) were employed and only 2.66 lakh persons (1.56 per cent of the total) were unemployed in Delhi. Out of the 2.66 lakh unemployed persons, about 2.12 lakh were male and remaining 0.54 lakh were female,” an official said.
However, over 90 per cent of the unemployed are youngsters. “Out of 2.66 lakh unemployed persons, about 2.50 lakh (93.84 per cent) were in the category of 15-29 years,” an official said.
