In a meeting of the Delhi Congress on Tuesday, chaired by Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Sheila Dikshit, the State unit appealed to Congress president Rahul Gandhi to withdraw his resignation from the party post and had allegedly asked the Congress Working Committee, the highest decision making body of the party, to find a replacement.

The Delhi Congress leaders said that it was a challenging time for the party and his leadership was required.

Ms. Dikshit said, “There is no need for the Congress president and the party workers to get disheartened by the setbacks in the Lok Sabha election. The Congress faced defeat in 1977 under the dynamic leadership of Indira Gandhi and fought back to wrest power two-and-a-half years later and it remained in power for several years thereafter.”

Ms. Dikshit thanked the people of Delhi for reposing their faith in the Congress party as the party bettered its result in the recent Lok Sabha election as compared to 2014. “The Congress candidates finished second in five of the seven Lok Sabha constituencies in Delhi, and Congress also came first in five Assembly segments and second in 42 Assembly constituencies,” Ms. Dikshit said.

She added that the condition of Delhi has deteriorated so “pathetically” that a clean and green Delhi left behind by the Congress government has now become a huge garbage dump under the AAP government.

“The Congress workers will go amidst the people with a positive agenda to win back their trust and confidence, and the party will bounce back with renewed vigour in the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi,” Ms. Dikshit said.
