A group of dancers-turned-carjackers was arrested, and 23 stolen motorcycles and scooters recovered from their possession, the police said on Sunday.
They said the gang was involved in theft of over 100 motorcycles in south-east and south Delhi areas.
The accused have been identified as Shubham, a 22-year-old a resident of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh; Suraj alias Yuvi, a 20-year-old resident of Kannauj in UP; and Deepak Kashyap alias Bunty, a 26-year-old from Meerut, the police added.
Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap on January 15 on M.B. Road in Pul Prahladpur. Shubham and Suraj were apprehended at 5.15 p.m. after they reached the spot on a motorcycle, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal.
During interrogation, the accused confessed that they stole motorcycles from south-east and south Delhi. At their instance, Deepak was arrested from Ghaziabad, Mr. Biswal said.
Shubham was the mastermind of the gang. He came to Delhi to learn dancing nearly four years ago and opened his own academy in Pul Prahladpur about a year ago, Mr. Biswal added. Shubham is a Class XI dropout, the police said.
Shubham met Deepak, who was earlier arrested in carjacking cases. Deepak managed lured him into stealing motorcycles with him. Shubham joined hands with him to make a quick buck. The accused sold the stolen vehicles in Meerut, the senior officer said.
Suraj was Shubham’s student. Since he was unable to pay his fees due to financial issues, he joined Shubham’s gang, Mr. Biswal added.
