Dalit woman still critical

October 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Rekha, the Dalit woman, who lost both her children - nine-month-old girl and three-year-old boy – after their house was set on fire in Faridabad has remained in the intensive care unit at Safdarjung Hospital for over a week after she was admitted in a critical condition.

“She is slightly better, but not out of danger. She has developed infection in the lungs,” Poonam Dhanda, spokesperson of Safdarjung Hospital, told The Hindu on Tuesday evening. Rekha was admitted with 25-30 per cent thermal burns on her face and upper part of the body. She has injuries in the lungs due to inhalation of fumes. “Rekha is still critical and hasn’t been moved out of the intensive care unit despite being offered round-the-clock medical care. She has made only marginal improvement. She is conscious, talking, and taking oral feed. She is being given anti-biotic,” said Ms. Dhanda.

Rekha is awaiting her transfer to a step-down intensive care unit in case her overall medical condition registers an improvement.
