The sixth Car-Free Day dawned crisp and cool on the Millennium City.
The highlight of Tuesday’s edition of the Car-Free Day was a cycle rally led by ace golfer Jyoti Randhawa and Joint Commissioner of Police Saurabh Singh.
The rally, which had almost 150 riders, saw representatives from American Express, Genpact, Embarq and Cykool participating.
The rally’s first stop was Shiv Nadar School where Mr. Randhawa addressed the students. The enthusiastic students were later heard shouting slogans of ‘No Car!’ with Sarika Panda of Embarq (India).
The rally then proceeded to Genpact on Golf Course Road, where the corporate house sprang a surprise with the inauguration of a cycle stand with about 15 cycles for employees to use in and around the campus.
Mr. Randhawa commended the effort and pledged that he would ensure his family also cycled on Tuesdays.
The rally’s last stop was the American Express office.
Mr. Randhawa also inaugurated a pledge board, which he signed saying “love cycling”.
The shift to sustainable transport is clearly evident from the numbers coming in from corporates.
The Unitech Cyber Park clocked a 17 per cent reduction in the number of incoming cars and a 23 per cent increase in the number of people using cycles to commute.
Corporate giant Nagarro, which recently inaugurated a cycle stand, saw a 60 per cent reduction in the number of incoming cars, which dipped from 700 to 230 on Tuesday. The American Express office, meanwhile, reported a reduction of 105 cars, while Cyber City saw a 35 per cent reduction.
The Gurgaon Police issued 558 challans for wrong parking on Car-Free Day.
