A police constable who had allegedly pushed a 66-year-old man at Dhaula Kuan here over a minor issue causing his death this past Tuesday has been arrested by the Delhi Police Crime Branch and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Constable Vikram Singh was earlier suspended pending inquiry following allegations that he pushed Anil Arora. Mr. Arora and his family members were returning home in Geeta Colony late on Tuesday night after attending his niece's ring ceremony in Dwarka. Around midnight, his son Mohit, who was driving the car, stopped near the Dhaula Kuan pre-paid taxi booth to replenish a water bottle.
Mohit walked up to the police constable, then talking on the mobile phone, to ask if he could get some water. When the constable did not reply, he started walking towards the nearby police post. The constable, later identified as Vikram, came from behind and allegedly held him by the collar, which led to a heated exchange between the two. On reaching the police post, the constable alleged that Mohit had misbehaved with him.
Mr. Arora also reached there and tried to intervene, at which the constable allegedly pushed him. The elderly man fell and collapsed. He was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
A three-member panel conducted post-mortem on the victim's body and a case was registered by the Crime Branch after the matter was reported to senior police officers.
