The Delhi Congress on Monday sought to underline the problem of the builder mafia in the National Capital Region among a gathering of home owners yet to get possession of their properties.
Presided over by its chief Ajay Maken, the gathering at Jantar Mantar here kept up party vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s combative stance on the new Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill, 2013, proposed by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Central Government.
“The builder mafia is fleecing the common people through devious methods, even as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is busy indulging in fights — either with his own party leaders or with the Lieutenant-Governor, and not bothered about the plight of the people of Delhi,” Mr. Maken told the gathering.
Mr. Gandhi had met organisations representing home buyers on Saturday at the Congress headquarters to discuss concerns regarding the Bill. Calling it “anti-consumer” as it allegedly dilutes penalties for late delivery of homes, he had said the Bill also allegedly does not safeguard against money being diverted from one project to another.
“The government, which has been working against farmers and tribals, is working against the middle class in the same manner,” Mr. Gandhi had told journalists after meeting several NCR flat buyers.
Party sources said it would rally behind home-owners on more occasions over the coming days, even as it will launch a concerted effort against the Bill in Parliament on Tuesday.
