Thanks to a new software-based initiative of the Delhi Transport Department, you will be soon be able to check the status of your Registration Certificates (RC) in real time.
This, before it arrives at your doorstep and you make endless trips to government offices.
Change in schedule
The new programme, which seeks to reduce both the rush of visitors and opportunities for touts at Regional Transport Offices (RTOs), is ready and was to be unveiled later this week by Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot.
It will now be launched after the Bawana bypolls on August 23.
“The initiative is in line with the file tracking system, which is already operational. New vehicle owners will get SMS alerts about the status of the issuance of their RCs till the time they are dispatched to their address through speed post,” said a senior government official.
According to official estimates, an estimated nine lakh to 10 lakh RCs are issued by the Department every year.
As opposed to making more than one call to the car dealer they purchase their vehicle from, or taking time out from their daily routine to visit the local Motor Licensing Officer (MLO) where they may have to wait endlessly, the process of issuing an RC will begin as soon as the documents required are submitted to the MLO by a car retailer.
Looking to help people
“At the moment, vehicle owners have to either depend on car dealers or make multiple trips to RTOs to get the RC. This not only causes inconvenience to the average car owner, but also gives touts in cahoots with some corrupt officials at RTOs the chance to make a quick buck. This will take a back seat once the new system is in place,” the official added.
Speed bump
The initiative, however, has stumbled onto a roadblock due to the upcoming Bawana bypolls, in light of which the government cannot announce any scheme as per the Model Code of Conduct.
On Thursday, the Election Commission had announced bypolls to four assembly seats.
Byelections to Delhi’s Bawana, Panaji and Valpoi in Goa and Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh will be held on August 23.
A notification for the by-elections will be issued on July 29, beginning the nomination process.
The Bawana seat was vacated after AAP MLA Ved Prakash resigned to join the BJP. He will now contest from his new party.
