Netflix on Thursday informed the Delhi High Court that a change had been incorporated in the English subtitle of Web series Sacred Games to remedy an alleged insult to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

In fourth episode of the series, lead actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui is seen abusing Mr. Gandhi.

“Now we are using [another] word as the English translation of the Hindi [abuse] word... ,” the counsel for Netflix told a Bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Chander Shekhar.

To a query by the Bench on the meaning of the Hindu word used by Nawazuddin, the counsel said it means ‘coward’.

The court asked whether the word had been correctly translated in the subtitles and asked Netflix to examine such parts in the web series. However, the court said it did not want to curtail the freedom of speech and expression.

“Criticism or even expression of dissatisfaction is permissible. I do not think anyone can have objection to it,” it said, listing the matter for August 6.
