Separate cases were registered against the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Aam Aadmi Party for allegedly not adhering to the directions given by authorities for holding campaign events at Connaught Place, said sources.
The events of both parties were scheduled around the same time and volunteers reached the venue on Sunday evening.
A source said the FIRs against the parties were filed under Section 188 (disobedience to order promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.
An Executive Magistrate present at the events found that both the parties had violated the guidelines as those were attended by more people than the permissible limits. The two FIRs were registered at the Magistrate’s complaint. AAP leader Mayank Gandhi alleged that the BJP volunteers were present without permission .
During the event, the party also tweeted that the BJP workers were getting aggressive and police officers refused to act.
While senior police officers of the New Delhi district did not respond to phone calls despite repeated attempts, Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi Range) M.K. Meena said while there was an argument between the two sides, there were no reports of violence.
