In an effort to mitigate air pollution caused due to bursting of crackers during Diwali, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change has initiated the ‘Harit Diwali-Swasth Diwali’ campaign.
A statement by the Ministry said it initiated the campaign keeping in mind that bursting of crackers released smoke and chemicals into the atmosphere, which in turn affects the children, elderly persons, birds and animals, apart from generating large amounts of waste. The campaign is expected to go on till the first week of November. As part of the campaign last year, schoolchildren, especially from Eco Clubs, took a pledge to minimise bursting of crackers, the statement added.
Encouraging students to take part in the initiative, the Ministry said “Children were asked to celebrate Diwali in an environment-friendly manner by gifting sapling to relatives and friends along with sweets.”
