The shooting took place in south Delhi’s Kotla Mubarakpur.

A 40-year-old cab driver was shot dead in his car by three men in a car after the side mirrors of the two vehicles allegedly brushed past each other in south Delhi’s Kotla Mubarakpur on Sunday morning.

The police said they received a call at 12.12 a.m. about a man being shot at in Kotla Mubarakpur’s main market.

A police team rushed to the spot and was informed that the injured man was taken to the AIIMS by a friend. When they reached the hospital, doctors informed the police that the man was declared brought dead.

A post-mortem has been conducted.

Friend was present

The police said that the deceased, Umesh Sharma, was employed with an app-based cab aggregator. Umesh was shot in the chest from close range. His friend Hemant, who was with him during the incident, rushed the victim to the hospital, said the police.

At the time of the incident, Umesh was in the driver’s seat while Hemant was in the passenger seat, said the police.

Umesh used to live in Kotla Mubarakpur before shifting to Sangam Vihar. He used to often come to the area to visit his old friends.

On Saturday night, he had come to meet Hemant. They were sitting and chatting inside Umesh’s cab that was parked on the narrow lane of the main market.

‘Without warning’

“A car was passing through the lane and the side mirrors of the two vehicles brushed past each other, triggering a verbal argument. During the argument, a man sitting in the rear seat of the car came out and shot Umesh in the chest without any warning and fled from the spot,” said the police.

The locals heard a gunshot and rushed to the spot to find a man lying unconscious in a pool of blood.

While Hemant took his friend to the hospital, the locals called up the police.

Murder case lodged

“We have registered a case under IPC section 302 (murder) at Kotla Mubarakpur police station against unknown persons. We have zeroed in on several suspects. We have got significant clues about the car. The accused will be arrested soon,” said Vijay Kumar, DCP (South).

Hemant is an eyewitness in the case and he has recorded his statement before the police officer investigating the case, said Mr. Kumar

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic death of our driver partner. We will be extending our support to the police authorities to help them in the investigation of the case,” said the spokesperson of the cab aggregator.
