A 44-year-old businessman was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne men outside his house in north-east Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar area on Monday night. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Ved Prakash Surya said the victim has been identified as Rajul Gupta, who ran an electronics showroom a few metres away from his house.

The police said they received a PCR call from a private hospital around 11.30 p.m. about a man being brought there with a gunshot injury on his back and that he was declared dead. The victim’s family members told the police that he was shot in front of his house by two men riding a motorbike.

Further investigation revealed that Mr. Gupta was returning home from his showroom around 9 p.m. on his scooty when he had a scuffle with two men who allegedly shot him and fled. “The reason behind the scuffle is not known yet. The family members have claimed that the victim used to wear a gold chain which is missing,” Mr. Surya said.

The police said Mr. Gupta was carrying a bag which was in his possession when he was found bleeding on the road by his family members.

The police have registered a case under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code, but based on the details shared by the family, they have added Section 392 (punishment for robbery). “The case is being investigated from all angles, including robbery and personal enmity. The family is being questioned to ascertain more details,” said a senior police officer.
