Two brothers were killed and two of their relatives injured when their speeding luxury car met with an accident at Britannia Chowk here in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to the police, Model Town resident Nikhil Bansal (35) died on the spot, while his elder brother Vineet Bansal (39) died during treatment a couple of hours later. The deceased are from a family which owns several businesses, including wholesale silver and steel. The two injured passengers were Nikhil's brothers-in-law Nitin (35) and Pradeep (34).
Nitin and Pradeep, who live in Gurgaon and Shahadra respectively, had on Tuesday come to visit the Bansals at their residence in D Block of C.C. Colony, Model Town.
“After finishing dinner around 10 p.m., the four left for Punjabi Bagh where the family of Nikhil and his two brothers-in-law live,” said a police officer.
The police suspect that they stopped over at some place on their way to consume alcohol. The officer said according to other family members, the four were sober when they left home.
Around 12-30 a.m. when the car reached Britannia Chowk, Nitin lost control which led to the car scaling a footpath and hitting a poll supporting a signboard of the petrol pump next to it. The car, still in motion, hit another poll (an electrical one this time) located a few metres away. It tilted after the two collisions and dragged a few metres before coming to a halt.
Some eyewitnesses purportedly told the police that the car was travelling at very high speed when it hit a pavement and two poles thereafter. The car was reduced to a mangled heap.
A passerby made a call to the PCR and a police team had to use gas cutters to get Nikhil out of the car. The four occupants were taken to a hospital where doctors declared Nikhil brought dead. Vineet, too, succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Nitin and Pradeep were discharged after treatment on Wednesday.
The two deceased siblings were both married with children.
They are also survived by their parents and grandparents.
While the aggrieved family refused to speak to the media, sources said Nikhil’s youngest child was born nearly a fortnight ago.
