Two brothers, allegedly involved in close to a 100 cases of snatching across the Capital, were arrested just four days after they had managed to give the police the slip.
Ajay and Rajesh had earlier been arrested under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and kept under judicial custody for six years which ended only in 2013.
“An undercover police team had almost succeeded in nabbing them on May 12 in Jasola. The personnel flagged down a motorcycle heading towards them, but it sped away,” said a senior police officer. The policemen noted down the vehicle’s registration number and began patrolling the area. The team reached Sarita Vihar and stumbled upon a fresh complaint of chain snatching.
An eyewitness had noted down the registration number of the bike used in the crime and provided it to the police team. This vehicle turned out to be the one it was looking for. “The team renewed its search and found the bikers at a traffic signal in the Madanpur Khadar area. They again fled leaving their motorcycle behind,” the officer said.
Technical surveillance was mounted which led the police to learn that Ajay and his brother Rajesh were staying at a hotel in Punjab’s Ropar. They were finally arrested.
Rajesh had fractures in both his legs which, he told the police, were sustained while jumping from one terrace to another in their bid to escape the police.
As many as 98 cases of snatching and robbery were found registered against the siblings.
