An 11-year-old boy lost his eyes in an acid attack by a teenager in Karawal Nagar in the trans-Yamuna area.
Upender Kumar, who stays in Gali No. 5 of Govind Vihar, had gone to play with his friend Firoz on June 20 in the afternoon when Firoz’s teenaged brother accosted them near Rama Garden.
The teenager was holding a plastic bottle and angrily asked Upender why he played with Firoz. Even before he could react, the accused poured the liquid in the bottle on his face. Soon, Upender realised that he had difficulty in seeing. Some of his friends then took him to his house. His father Rajbir Singh then took the boy to Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital.
The boy is under treatment at the hospital. “The doctors told us that both his eyes are badly damaged and he might never be able to see again,” said Upender’s mother Rajrani.
Clueless about the motive behind the attack, Rajrani said the accused had warned Upender to stay away from Firoz on a couple of occasions earlier, but they dismissed it as nothing serious. “We had never imagined that things would come to such a pass,” said Rajrani.
The family lodged the complaint eight days after the incident. “Many of our neighbours had suggested that we approach the police, but we got too busy with his treatment and did not find time for filing the complaint,” said Rajrani.
Meanwhile, the police detained the teenager after the victim’s family made a formal complaint on June 28. A case has been registered under Section 326 of the Indian Penal Code.
