The BJP approached Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ranbir Singh with a complaint each against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress here on Monday.

Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta and South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of getting “publicity letters” addressed to Delhi Jal Board (DJB) consumers in violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) being distributed along with water utility bills.

The Congress, on the other hand, was accused of violating the MCC on social media through a video post consisting of “abusive language” including insinuations of being a “ chor ” or thief. “The AAP under the leadership of Kejriwal has thrown the MCC to the dustbin. The Chief Minister, who is also the Water Minister as well as Chairperson of DJB, has got printed lakhs of copies of the letter addressed by him in the capacity of Chief Minister on his official letterhead to DJB consumers. These letters are ready to be distributed along with the bills of consumers to their homes in costly large-sized envelopes,” the BJP alleged.

Kejriwal’s achievements

According to the BJP leaders, the letter allegedly outlines Mr. Kejriwal’s achievements during the last four years and, allegedly in violation of the MCC, assures the consumer of implementation of a scheme by which Delhiites will get 24 hours water supply.

The Opposition alleged that the AAP was “misusing government machinery” to spread political propaganda and influence voters by illegal and clandestine means. While one truck with such letters was allegedly at a DJB facility in Narela, the other was found at a similar facility at Ashok Vihar.

“It clearly shows that Kejriwal does not care about the EC guidelines, law and the spirit in which free, fair and smooth elections are to be conducted in a democracy. We demand that the EC raid DJB offices immediately and seize all the campaign material,” they alleged.

Meanwhile, in its complaint against the Congress, the BJP pointed towards a video posted by the party on its official Twitter handle on March 22 with statements such as “Chowkidaar chor hai” and “Modi chor hai” that attempted to “show the country’s PM in bad light”.
