Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday called for an immediate and independent audit of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) accounts and said that fare hikes should be put on hold until all files are examined.
He added that the DMRC should put its income and expenditure in the public domain as an expensive Metro would be out of reach for the common man.
“If the commuters are unable to use the Metro due to high fares, what would be the utility of running the Metro,” asked the CM.
Sources in the DMRC said that since the corporation is a government company, all their accounts and annual reports are available on their website.
Mr. Kejriwal said that an audit was needed, as Delhiites “have already experienced how discoms used to hike tariffs by showing fake losses”. He added that the DMRC’s argument that a hike is required to repay its loan and covering operational costs is “highly flawed”. “On the contrary, the Delhi Metro needs to increase its efficiency,” said Mr. Kejriwal.
