Athlete to face trial for intimidation

A Delhi court has refused to quash a summon order asking a woman national basketball player to face trial in a case of criminal intimidation saying that there is no infirmity in it.

Accused Meena Gill had sought quashing of the order passed by an Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) at Tis Hazari district courts by filing a revision petition in the court of Special Judge Kovai Venugopal.

Dismissing her petition, the Judge said: “In view of the settled legal position and statements of complainant witnesses, I do not see any infirmity in the order dated 03.02.2018 passed by ACMM.”

The complainant submitted before the ACMM that he and his colleagues at the office where the sportswoman worked filed a complaint that she used to come late on duty but marked attendance for full day. She would remain in office for just half-an-hour, he alleged. One day when a meeting of the staff members was going on, the player came there and threatened him that she would implicate him in a false case of sexual harassment, the complainant alleged.

Counsel for the player argued before the court that the complainant being Office Superintendent could not do surveillance over her presence and movements. The player was an assistant at the office. The complainant had some ulterior motive to file a false and frivolous case against her, her counsel further said. But the court dismissed her arguments.
