A day-long protest demanding an early hearing in regard to the Dalit Muslim reservation issue was staged by the All India United Muslim Morcha (AIUMM), a body which works for the cause of rights of people from the community, at Jantar Mantar here on Saturday.

Hafiz Gulam Sarwar, AIUMM national spokesperson, said that the issue was pending in the Supreme Court since 2004 for a final verdict even as a “large chunk” of Muslim Dalits continued to be denied Scheduled Caste status since August 10, 1950.

“We have named this day ‘The day of Injustice’. On this very day, an Ordinance, popularly known as Presidential order 1950, was brought by the Nehru government and promulgated to Article 341. From our view, this order is colourable, unconstitutional, discriminatory and violative of fundamental rights,” Mr. Sarwar said.

“Because of this injustice, a large chunk of Indian Muslim are educationally, economically and socially, at the lowest ebb of the Indian population. We appreciate the brave step taken by our PM on Article 370...We want a similar bold step for correction in Article 341 in order to accommodate Dalit Muslims in reservation,” he added.
