Action against a Delhi Police Head Constable by the Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) led to a face-off between Delhi Police and the Aam Aadmi Party once again.
The ruling party has accused Delhi Police of shielding the official who was arrested by the ACB on Friday evening. The head constable, along with two other policemen was, allegedly, taking bribe from a scrap dealer in north east Delhi’s Sonia Vihar.
“Head constable Anil was arrested while he was accepting bribe. There were two others also along with him, an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) and a constable but they managed to escape,” a senior official said.
However, Delhi Police announced on Saturday afternoon that they had, on Friday night, lodged an FIR in connection with the kidnapping of the said head constable on the basis of a complaint registered by his wife. They said that they were informed about the arrest only on Saturday afternoon by the ACB.
The move has set-off a fresh face off between the ruling party and the police which have been at loggerheads in the past on the issue of probing farmer Gajendra Singh's suicide at Jantar Mantar.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also accused the Delhi Police of shielding its official. ACB's move came after a complainant identified as Javed made a call at the government's helpline 1031.
“Head constable Anil, ASI Amar Singh and constable Raman had been extorting the complainant for a long time. Few days back, they had demanded Rs 10,000 from him. At that time, he had recorded a video of the accused policemen,” an official with the ACB said.
“They did not budge even after that and came to extort money from him on Friday. On Friday, the complainant made a call at 1031 and a team of ACB reached at the spot. While head constable was arrested, the other two managed to escape,” he added.
The accused was produced before a special court on Saturday that granted his three days custody to the ACB.
According to the officials, all three policemen are posted at the Sonia Vihar police station and claim to be a member of the special staff of Station House Officer's team to extort money from people.
