: A 24-year-old schoolteacher, who was allegedly kept in confinement by her father and brother and tortured by them, knocked the doors of the Delhi High Court on Thursday seeking protection.
The woman, Kavita*, said her father and elder brother objected to her friendship with a male colleague. They, therefore, allegedly forced her into confinement at their house on December 23. She managed to escape on Wednesday, after which she was provided accommodation by an acquaintance.
She said she was verbally and physically abused by them during the period she was kept confined. The woman was also allegedly forced to pen two suicide notes.
She further said that her father and brother had been bent upon marrying her off since she was in Class IX.
Her mother, too, was illegally confined, and is yet to be rescued, Kavita* said. Fearing for her mother and herself, she decided to take legal help. On Thursday, Kavita* made an urgent prayer for protection before the court of Justice B. D. Ahmed and Ashutosh Kumar.
‘Fear of honour killing’
“I was confined at home for days together and forced to write suicide notes. Please grant me an urgent hearing as I apprehend honour killing,” her counsel said.
Taking note of this, the High Court directed the police to produce her mother, father and brother before it on Tuesday.
Later, she was granted an in-chamber hearing, where Kavita* spoke about her ordeal.
