Trip down memory lane in vintage cars

February 11, 2017 12:15 am | Updated 12:15 am IST - NEW DELHI:

As many as 100 vintage cars dating back to the pre-World War I era are expected to roll down the streets of the Capital next weekend as part of the seventh edition of the 21 Gun Salute International Vintage Car Rally.

Car race on Feb 19

The rally, which will be held on February 17 and 18, will be followed by a vintage car race at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida on February 19, said Madan Mohan, chairman and managing trustee of the 21 Gun Salute Heritage and Cultural Trust.

“With nearly 100 hand-picked vintage and classic cars from India, Germany, France, United States, Italy and the United Kingdom, this year’s rally will be grander than previous editions. The vision is to place India as a world-class global motoring tourism destination,” said Mr. Mohan.

Restored cars on display

The three-day event will also include a show at India Gate where newly-restored vintage cars will be on display.

Among the cars on display will be the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost from 1911, Rolls-Royce Phantom 5 from 1967, the Moon from 1922, and the Cadillac V12 from 1933. Apart from this, 25 motorcycles will also be on display.

Further, Mr. Mohan added that after Delhi, the plan was to expand the event to other parts of India by 2019. Besides a rally that will cover the heritage circuit — including Agra, Jaipur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Barmer — a vintage car museum has also been planned for Gurugram in 2020.
