If the recommendations of a proposed Commonwealth Games Act are approved, private vehicles driving on lanes designated for ferrying Commonwealth Games participants could be impounded.
According to Delhi Police Commissioner Y. S. Dadwal, the police have suggested that driving on lanes meant for the Games teams be treated as a violation for general commuters. “The vehicle of the violator would be impounded,” he added.
The set of proposals include provisions vesting various powers in volunteers for the Games, treating them at par with government servants. They would be empowered to issue binding instructions, clear roads for movements of VIPs and participants, and also impound vehicles in case of violations attracting such a penalty.
The proposals include enhancement of fines for various traffic violations to deter commuters from breaching rules.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr. Dadwal urged the public to cooperate with the police to ensure smooth conduct of the Games. “During the event, they can use the public transport systems like the metro rail and buses,” said Mr. Dadwal, adding that it would ease the traffic flow. As one lane would be used exclusively by the Games participants, there would be more traffic on the other lanes.
The police would appeal to the traders’ organisations to keep their offices and shops closed during the closing ceremony of the Games on October 14 next year.
Rescheduling holidays
The Police Commissioner also suggested that schools could reschedule holidays during the event. These measures would ensure less traffic on the roads. “We need public support,” said Mr. Dadwal, urging everyone to help out.
The police will soon launch a publicity campaign seeking public cooperation to make the event a grand success.
