Protest against inflated power bills

October 22, 2009 08:23 pm | Updated 08:23 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The office-bearers of a number of residents’ welfare associations of South Delhi participated in a demonstration in front of the BSES corporate office in Nehru Place here on Thursday to protest against issuance of inflated electricity bills by the private power distribution company.

Addressing the protesters, former Leader of MCD House and Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Jitender Kumar Kochar said ever since power distribution was privatised in the city, the discoms have been fleecing the consumers. He said consumers were being compelled to waste several hours in the offices of the discoms to settle their inflated bills.

Mr. Kochar, who had contested the Delhi Assembly election from Greater Kailash against Vijay Kumar Malhotra of the BJP in 2008, said the demonstration was a wake-up call for the private power companies to mend their ways, help the consumers and set right the inflated electricity bills.

He demanded that excess money collected from consumers be returned forthwith and cautioned that if the demands of the residents were not met, the agitation would be intensified and officials of the discoms would not be allowed to leave their offices.
