Congress leader Shashi Tharoor could soon be subjected to a polygraph test in connection with the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar, media reports said on Tuesday.
Senior police officers, however, denied the reports saying they had no such plans yet. Mr. Tharoor’s office too said that the former minister had received no such request from the police, and that he was willing to cooperate with them.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with probing the case has already conducted a polygraph test on six people closely associated with Mr. Tharoor. It was conducted after a court allowed the test with the consent of those named by the police.
The test is conducted at the Lodhi Colony office of the Central Bureau of Investigation. If and when Mr. Tharoor is subjected to the polygraph test, the questioning will be related to the Indian Premier League (IPL) controversy, the couple’s trips to Dubai, and the alleged strained relationship between them.
So far, Mr. Tharoor’s domestic helps Narayan Singh and Bajrangi, and family friends Sanjay Dewan, S K Sharma, Vikas Ahlawat and Sunil Takru have been subjected to the polygraph test that was conducted in the presence of their lawyers.
The test reports will help the police find directions in the investigation, but they are not accepted as evidence in the court. The police are also awaiting the report of Ms. Pushkar’s viscera samples which is expected to arrive from the U.S.’ Federal Bureau of Investigation in July. The report will identify the ‘poison’ that killed her.
