Wanted for the alleged rape of a PhD scholar, Jawaharlal Nehru University student Anmol Ratan surrendered before the Delhi Police on Wednesday night.

Conforming the development, Nupur Prasad, Additional DCP (South), said Ratan surrendered at Vasant Kunj (North) police station around 10 pm. The case against him has been registered at Vasant Kunj (South) police station.

Ratan was evading arrest ever since a fellow JNU student on Sunday accused him of raping her in his hostel on Saturday after sedating her drink. He had lured her there by offering to provide her a copy of the film ‘Sairat’ as she had written a Facebook post asking if anyone had the movie.

Ratan, who is also an activist of the All India Students’ Union (AISA), had earlier applied for anticipatory bail, but the court had postponed the hearing to Saturday as the police had said they expected to arrest him before that.

Teams had visited the university campus as well as raided several possible hideouts in Delhi and NCR in a bid to nab him, senior officers had claimed.

The victim, meanwhile, was unable to record her statement before a judicial magistrate on two consecutive days because of ill health before she was finally able to record it on Wedneday.
