ITO Chungi fully operational from today

November 25, 2009 05:11 pm | Updated 05:11 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The much awaited ITO Chungi underpass project aimed at making the busy ITO intersection signal-free will become fully operational this Wednesday with the opening of the last remaining cloverleaf connecting traffic from Gandhi Nagar to ITO.

A Public Works Department official said on Tuesday: “After speaking to the traffic police we have decided to open the cloverleaf around 3 p.m. on Wednesday as the traffic density at that time is not as high as during the morning hours. We have also already erected a temporary board there signalling the diversion.” “With three other cloverleaves and two carriageways already operational, straight traffic between Laxmi Nagar and ITO was also opened over the weekend. Now with the last cloverleaf opening on Wednesday, the ITO intersection would become completely signal-free. Only minor works remain such as erecting permanent overhead boards and beautifying the middle portion of the loop with grass. All these works will have no impact on the traffic flow at the intersection,” he added.

The Rs.73.7-crore project that had been delayed by over six months envisaged construction of four cloverleaves and an underpass below Vikas Marg through an eight-lane divided carriageway. The project had caused great inconvenience to commuters for months because of the tedious and long-winding diversions put in place during the construction period.
