DDA disability row: NGO holds protest

January 17, 2017 01:30 am | Updated 01:30 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A disability rights group on Monday staged a protest in front of the Delhi Development Authority headquarters, days after the DDA “relieved” an official as director of public relations allegedly on the grounds of his “disability”.

Demanding that action be taken against DDA vice-chairman Udai Pratap Singh, the Disabled Rights Group (DRG) stated: “This protest is to highlight the unfair dismissal and repatriation of Dr. Rishi Raj Bhati, a person with disability, who has been a government servant for 16 years and recently joined as director of public relation, DDA. Within two days of joining, Dr. Bhati was handed a relieving letter stating that the nature of the job would cause him inconvenience and that this also would not be in the interest of the organisation. This was done by the DDA V-C on grounds of his disability. This is a gross violation of human rights.”

The group noted that the incident comes days after the enactment of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, which seeks to protect the rights and dignity of people with disabilities and to provide them equal education and employment across India.
