Two Delhi Police constables had a narrow escape when three bike-borne assailants fired at them in Central Delhi’s Connaught Place on Saturday. The constables also fired in retaliation, five rounds were fired by both sides at the spot near Shankar Market.

According to the police, Constables Pratik and Sandeep, posted with Barakhambha Road police station, were on beat duty when the incident took place around 8-30 p.m.

“They had information about some anti-social elements in the area and were on their way duty to check it,” said a senior police officer. While on duty, they noticed three men on a motor-cycle near Super Bazaar and signalled them to stop their suspicious activity.

The accused, however, tried to flee. “The constables then chased them on their bikes and intercepted them near Railway Colony in Connaught Place,” the officer added.

It is alleged that one of the accused whipped out a pistol and opened fire at them. They fired four shots, but the policemen were not hit. One of the constables also fired a shot in retaliation, but the three men were also not injured. The three men then left the motorcycle at the spot and ran in different directions during which one of them was overpowered by locals.
