The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) will launch a special drive against polythene bags on Monday, besides creating awareness about the use of cloth bags.

Surprise checks

Sudhir Kumar, sanitary inspector (Zone 3), said that surprise checks would be conducted at shops in the area with challans being issued against those using polythene bags. Violators will be fined anywhere between ₹500 and ₹25,000, depending on the weight of the seizure, said Mr. Kumar.

The checks will be carried out in Sectors 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 51, 52, 53 and 54, among others. “So far, the MCG teams were issuing challans for open dumping and burning of waste. Now, we will launch a campaign against the use of po

On Friday, the MCG teams conducted surprise checks at the Vyapar Kendra and DLF Qutab Plaza Market. While no challans were issued, shopkeepers were warned against using polythene bags.

The campaign against polythene bags was launched over a year ago at the behest of MCG Commissioner T.L. Satyaprakash. Ever since, several self-help groups and inmates at the Bhondsi district jail have been engaged in making cloth bags. School children, too, have been sensitised as part of the campaign to encourage use of cloth bags.

‘Not very successful’

The MCG has now set a target of supplying 10 lakh cloth bags in the next three months. Shopkeepers, however, said that the campaign was not very successful as customers did not carry their own bags and were not willing to pay extra for the cloth bags they supplied. “The campaign is successful only in malls where people are ready to pay for cloth bags,” said a shopkeeper in the Sector 15 (Part-II) market.
