The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Monday said that it had helped an 11-year-old rape victim get a compensation of ₹7.5 lakh .
Life imprisoment
The minor was sexually assaulted by her step-father in 2014, a balloon seller, who her mother had married after her husband passed away. The girl had earlier been paid a compensation of ₹1 lakh. On October 13, the Karkardooma court awarded life-imprisonment to the step-father who had committed the crime.
“The convict was the step father of the victim and being the father, he was supposed to protect the child who was too young at the time. Instead of protecting the child, the convict took advantage of the same and raped her, which is highly abominable. Therefore, I am of the opinion that it is a fit case where maximum punishment be awarded to the convict,” read the judgment.
Swati Maliwal, DCW chairperson said, “The sentence should be a message to the rest of society that such a heinous crime will not be tolerated. Lawyers associated with the DCW are working in 22 different courts spread all over the Capital. We are working especially towards providing compensation to minors.”
