Recent incidents of little girls being sexually abused in the city has led senior police officers instructing their men to go all out to recover missing children.

Efforts by the police, combined with help from people, has led to the recovery of at least four children reported lost on Wednesday.

In the first case, a four-year-old girl was found in the safe custody of a woman in north-west Delhi’s Rani Bagh area. Recognising her role in ensuring the child’s safety, the police announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for her.

The girl was separated from her parents around 10 p.m. on Wednesday during a visit to the Krishna Temple in Rani Bagh.

A woman named Nirmala found the girl.

“On not finding the girl’s parents nearby, Nirmala took her home, gave her a bath, fed her and got her to sleep,” said a senior police officer.

The police, on the other hand, immediately registered a case and constituted six teams to track her, said Vijay Singh, DCP (North-West). Their efforts bore fruit when they came across Nirmala’s brother on Thursday morning, who told police that the girl was safe.

Police found the girl heading to the local police station in a rickshaw with Nirmala. The girl was reunited with her family after her father identified her.

On the same day that this girl went missing, police reunited three more lost girls with their parents.

By the end of Wednesday, three missing children aged between three and four years had been found.

The first of these girls had wandered away while attending a function at a temple in Prashant Vihar.

“We immediately formed a dozen teams to track her. She was recovered around three hours later from the jurisdiction of an adjoining police station,” Vikramjit Singh, DCP (Outer), told The Hindu .

The girl had walked around three kilometres away from the spot and was seen crying by a hawker.

When police identified her using images shared through WhatsApp, the hawker was walking her to a police station, the officer said.

Hours later, two separate incidents of four-year-old girls going missing from Dussehra fairs in north and south Rohini were reported.

Both the kids had lost their way after getting separated from their parents, but were found by the police, the DCP added.
