Four men, including a teacher, were arrested by the Crime Branch for their alleged involvement in the abduction of a London-based businessman earlier this year, the police said on Tuesday. The victim was rescued along with one of his employees.

Identified as Iliyas (28), Naseem (25), Irfan (26), and Abid (22), the gang belongs to Haryana’s Mewat district, and they were carrying a total cash reward of Rs. 2.5 lakh, said Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime). “On February 3 , the wife of the businessman, who has a sizable scrap business in Ahmedabad and London, informed us that her husband had left Ahmedabad for Delhi the previous day, but hadn’t reached the Capital,” said Mr. Yadav.

“A call from her father-in-law had followed to inform her that her husband had been abducted and those behind the crime were demanding Rs. 1 crore as ransom for his release. An employee accompanying him had also been abducted,” Mr. Yadav said.

A case was registered following which a team of the Crime Branch Interstate Cell conducted raids across Mewat and several parts of the Capital culminating in the arrest of one of the accused, later identified as Javed. The victims were rescued unhurt.

The rescued businessman, the police said, revealed that around 15 days prior to his abduction, he had received a telephone call from a person who claimed to be a scrap dealer based near Delhi. He had informed him that he had a large quantity of aluminium scrap he wanted to dispose of.

“The businessman was asked to come to Delhi to finalise the deal. When he reached the Capital on February 3 , he and his employee met the purported scrap dealer at the Old Delhi railway station and boarded a vehicle that had been brought by the latter,” said Mr. Yadav.

“Subsequently, at gunpoint, they were taken to a village where they were kept hostage. In an attempt to escape harm, the businessman had told them that he was not the owner of the firm but an employee following which the gang had decided to contact his father in the U.K. and demand ransom from him,” Mr. Yadav said.
