Arrested accused Sukhwinder (left) and the centre’s caretaker Sumit Arora.

A caretaker and his friend were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly beating an inmate to death inside a de-addiction centre here a day before. The police said that the third accused is absconding.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal said that accused Sumit Arora and Sukhwinder have been arrested while their associate Manoj Sharma is on the run.

The police said that Sumit was arrested from Ghaziabad and Sukhwinder was arrested from east Delhi with the help of technical and human surveillance. Sumit, the police said, was an inmate himself about two years ago. He later became the caretaker of the centre that provided him a minimal salary and shelter.

During interrogation, the accused told the police that victim Amit Bhiduri was brought in on Monday night and was left to sleep on the floor.

Sumit, Sukhwinder and the other accused started beating him with a baton. They also shaved his eyebrows and head with a hair trimmer.

“The accused threatened other inmates, asking them not to inform anyone about the incident and fled the spot with the digital video recorder that contained the CCTV footage,” said Mr. Biswal.

The police also said that Sumit is a “sadist”, who beat the victim just “to satisfy his psychological whim”.
