Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) will be launching a campaign to raise awareness on issues of women’s safety with a 12-day march being called Mahila Suraksha Yatra, starting February 24, it said in a statement on Wednesday.
DCW chief Swati Maliwal along with other members of the commission will take out the march for 12 days up to March 8, the statement read. As part of the ‘yatra’, DCW members will stay in jhuggis. During this time, issues concerning women’s safety will be looked into and action taken on the spot, the DCW said.
The yatra will focus on drawing attention to long standing demands of the commission to increase police accountability and resources in the city as well as to set up fast track courts to address women’s safety issues.
‘Mahila Suraksha Dal’
The DCW will also be launching a Mahila Suraksha Dal, which will include members of civil defence, who will help women redress their complaints, it said.
The Dal will engage volunteers from the community to become Mahila Suraksha Mitras. Those interested in joining the group can do so by calling 9350181181.
Ms. Maliwal said “Our soldiers are unsafe on the border and women and girls are unsafe within the country. Time has come for people to take to streets to demand action on issues concerning our external and internal security”
The yatra will culminate with an event at Central Park in Connaught Place to commemorate the International Women’s Day.
