An awareness drive and a continuing medical education (CME) were held at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Tuesday to mark the World Asthma Day.
The programme was organised by the Paediatric and the Thoracic Departments with the hospital staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students participating in it.
The CME dealt with diagnosis, deduction and treatment of paediatric asthma, which was on the rise as nearly 15 cases were being admitted every week at the CMCH, the tertiary hospital for Western districts and border districts of Kerala. Hospital Dean A. Edwin Joe says the increase is due to high humidity and the concentration of industries in Coimbatore, which resulted in high concentration of suspended particulate matter in the atmosphere.
The diagnosis for children is difficult as symptoms are similar for asthma and other diseases
Discussions were held on the need for bringing an Oxy-Genator for CMCH.
