Woman poisons self, two children; one dies

A 33-year-old woman attempted suicide after poisoning her two children at Sowripalayam in the city on Monday. While her seven-year-old daughter died, the woman and her three-year-old son were saved. The police said that D. Divya (33) of Sowripalayam gave poison to daughter Nikita and son Dev and consumed the same following a family dispute. She then telephoned a relative around 12 p.m. Relatives, who rushed to the house, admitted the three to a private hospital. However, Nikita died without responding to treatment. Divya and Dev are under treatment.

Two arrested

The Prohibition Enforcement Wing of Coimbatore Rural Police on Sunday arrested two persons for smuggling spurious liquor from Puducherry to Coimbatore. C. Prabu (34) of Kaniyur and P. Arokkiya Dass (48) of Alangudi in Pudukottai were arrested by the police based on a complaint lodged by a man who reportedly suffered from giddiness, vomiting and dysentery after consuming the liquor that he bought from Prabhu. The police arrested Prabhu and he confessed that he had sourced the liquor from Dass. Dass is accused of mixing chemicals in liquor for easy intoxication.

Action sought

Nagaraj (48) of Perumagoundenpalayam near Palladam on Monday petitioned the Tirupur Collector seeking action against a siddha hospital for alleged faulty treatment. According to Nagaraj, his wife Mayilathal (44) underwent treatment for skin disease at the hospital, following which her health worsened. Based on the petition, the Collectorate officials asked the Tirupur police to inquire into the reasons that led to the worsening of Mayilathal’s health condition.

Four arrested

Tirupur Crime Branch Police have arrested a driver and his three friends on charges of looting yarn bales worth ₹67.89 lakh.

According to police, Mariappan, the driver, along with Sudhakar was employed by Pushparaj, a truck owner of Sankagiri to transport yarn bales. The two, instead of delivering the yarn bales at Kasipalayam in Tirupur, parked the lorry at Perumanallur. With the help of two other drivers Senthil Kannan and Arumugapandian and with the connivance of his friends Ramesh, Ranjith and Charles, Mariappan stole the yarn bales and sold it off. While the police managed to arrest Mariappan and three others, search continues for Sudhakar, Senthil Kannan and Arumugapandian.
