Woman injured

A 35-year-old woman from Veerapandi Pirivu suffered injuries when she ran away and fell, after seeing a herd of elephants in the early hours of Sunday.

G. Keerthana of Salem, working in a brick kiln at Veerapandi Pirivu, was injured in her face and leg.

Sources said that she woman was sleeping in shed where bricks were laid to dry.

A herd of elephants strayed to the place at night, reportedly in search of water or attracted by the fermented smell of the pith of palmyra tree trunk used as firewood in kilns.

Sensing the presence of elephant herd, she ran from the shed and suffered injuries after falling.

She was taken to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital.

The Forest Department has deployed anti-poaching watchers in the area for night patrols on Sunday.
