A 37-year-old woman from Negamam near Pollachi died allegedly after she underwent an abortion at a private clinic on Monday.
Police said the woman, identified as S. Vanithamani from Mettuvavi near Negamam, was in the fifth month of pregnancy.
According to the police, the condition of the woman, a mother of five children, deteriorated when Muthulakshmi, who runs the private clinic at Vadasidhur near Pollachi, attempted the procedure on the woman. The relatives took the woman to Government Hospital, Pollachi, where doctors declared her brought dead.
Negamam Inspector D. Vetrivel Rajan said that the woman, who performed the abortion, was booked under Section 314 (Death caused by act done with intent to cause miscarriage) of the IPC, based on a complaint lodged by Selvaraj, husband of the deceased. The Inspector said the police were trying to trace the woman who went missing after the incident. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was shifted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
Sources with the Health Department said that they were yet to confirm whether the woman, who performed the medical termination of pregnancy, was a registered medical practitioner.
