To prevent spotted deer, wild pigs and other herbivores straying into human habitations in search of water, the Department of Forest has created five small water troughs in Thukkkanaikkenpalayam Forest Range in Sathyamangalam Division here.

The Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve is home to elephants, tiger, leopards, gaur, black buck, hyena, deer and other animals

. Due to non-availability of water inside the forest area, animals straying into human habitations are common and hence the department had created water troughs at many places inside the forest.

During summer season, these troughs are filled with water.

Filling of troughs that can hold over 5,000 litre of water began recently. Since these troughs are mainly used by elephants and other wild animals, the department had created small troughs, each with a capacity of 300 litres.

Officials said that these five troughs in Banglapudur and Kanakampalayam beats would mainly fulfil the water needs of spotted deer and other herbivores and would be refilled regularly. They added that birds would also utilise these troughs to quench thirst.
