With over 11,000 residents, Ward 90 that extends from Perur Main Road in the north to Arivoli Nagar (Madukkarai Panchayat) in the south and from Sundakkamuthur in the west to the Tamil Nadu Special Police IVth Battallion in the east, is a fairly well-organised area.
The ward covers the whole of Kovaipudur and 50-plus layouts or residential colonies. And, almost the entire ward is residential with a few commercial activity.
The Corporation supplies Siruvani water directly from the main pipeline in Chettipalayam, storing it in three tanks in Kovaipudur and another one outside. But the quantity of water the Corporation supplied is insufficient, say residents.
The Tamil Nadu Housing Board(TNHB) had designed the tanks to meet the requirements of only the housing board residents. But now the Corporation was using those to supply water to the residents of the 50 residential colonies as well, says M.V. Namby, vice-president, Kovaipudur Residents Welfare Association.
After much representation, the Corporation began constructing a huge tank a year and a half ago. But to date it had not completed the work, perhaps for want of funds. It must expedite the project so as to ease water crisis, he adds.
Ground water too is a problem as residents without borewells buy water from tankers. The residents in the 50-plus localities want the Corporation to treat them on a par with the residents of the TNHB tenements and supply borewell water as well.
Storm water drain
The next big demand is storm water drain and underground drainage for the entire ward. The TNHB tenements in Kovaipudur had both the facility but absence of outlet for the storm water drain and failure to connect the underground drainage to a sewage treatment plant had rendered both useless.
The Corporation should develop the infrastructure for the entire ward, says Bharathi Nagar resident G. Thirumoorthy. With a number of private and State transport corporation buses terminating in Kovaipudur and most of the commuters being senior citizens, there is also demand for a bus terminus with basic amenities, says resident M. Murali.
