Vital organs retrieved from brain dead person

Vital organs were retrieved from a brain dead person at a city hospital.

Manickam (64) was admitted to the G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital here on June 19 following a suspected heart attack. A CT Scan revealed that bleeding in the brain with dilated ventricles.

Surgery

Following this, doctors performed a surgery to insert a drain tube in the brain. However, despite the surgery, the patient was unresponsive.

Further scans on June 21 revealed more fluid accumulation in the brain and he was diagnosed with having suffered from irreversible brain damage.

He was declared brain dead by four different doctors.

His family was informed of the condition and counselled about organ donation.

Family consent

Upon obtaining the family’s consent, the hospital coordinated with the Tamil Nadu Cadaver Transplant Program for finding out the recipients.

A team of doctors retrieved the organs the same day. The liver and both the kidneys were donated to patients at Kovai Medical Center and Hospitals, the eyes were given to Sankara Eye Care Hospital and the skin to Ganga Hospital here.
