The Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu has urged the State Government to reconsider its proposal to impose a ban on the manufacture, sale, storage and usage of disposable plastic across the state with effect from January 1 next year.

Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday on the sidelines of a meeting to discuss the government proposal here, A. M. Vikiramaraja, president of the Peramaippu, said that the announcement of ban has shocked the plastic goods manufacturers and the traders.

He said that the All India Plastic Manufacturers’ Association, traders and users will be holding a joint meeting in Chennai on December 15 to discuss the issue. The meeting will decide on holding massive agitation, if the State Government did not concede the demand for the postponement of the deadline for the ban on plastic articles.

The traders’ bodies have proposed to hold a rally in New Delhi on December 19 to oppose the ban on plastic articles and also demanding amendments to the Food Safety Act, he said.
